About Me

The Neighborhood Basketball Program was founded in 2010, and has been providing a quality basketball league to the public ever since. Located in Mira Mesa, and does all kinds of awesome things for the Mira Mesa community. This page is about me

Who am I

Hi my name is John Garwood I grew up in Detroit, Michigan. Played for my high school team, which is where I learn most of my basketball knowledge, played for a guy name Eddie Rachal. Then went on to play at University of Toledo Rockets. Played for Coach Bob Nichols he won 20 games for 20 seasons. I played one year and gain experience on what not to do. You should not transfer schools unless there is a coaching change (rule #1). I transferred schools went to a junior college called Lincoln Trail College (so much fun). However one year there then went to San Diego State University Aztecs

How I became the Neighborhood Basketball Program

In 1996 I got a job for the city of San Diego as a recreation Leader 1, they thought I had skills for being a rec leader so they promoted me to Rec. Leader 2. I needed money with a baby on the way, so I applied for the job, grounds maintenance worker. Got the job at Mira Mesa Recreation Center. As a Rec. Leader 2, I had worked close to all the Rec staff. One staff was running a basketball class I volunteered to do the class, 2 weeks later I took over the class. I became a contractual basketball instructor. The basketball league program director position came open in 2010 I applied, and we have partnered up with San Diego parks and Rec for 10 years to this. My mission for the league is everything I do for the kids is for there survival. In the sport of basketball dropping life gems. As one coach told me,”as in sports as in life.
